About

Demand of Geography as a subject has been growing day by day. In 2006, the college has opened this department. It is moving forward with enormous passion and interest, stretching its arm towards perfection.

The Undergraduate course of Geography caters to imparting both theoretical and practical knowledge. The students get trained in different modern geographical techniques from GIS to cartography to statistics and more. The Department aspires to enrich students with wide knowledge of the subject and at the same time train and guide the fresh batch of students to become noble citizens and good geographers. The department offers B.A/B.Sc Honours and General courses in Geography (GEOA/GEOG) with CBCS and CCF system as per University of Calcutta norm. At present the intake capacity of the Department in Honours course would be 72.

The department has a well-equipped laboratory. It also has a GIS Laboratory with several computers. The lab is equipped with the following instruments:

Computational and other Facilities:

There are Computers, Printer, LCD-projector-based classroom, Internet facility for students. GIS software based computational facilities are also available in the department.

As per CU syllabus the department arranges a study tour cum field survey each year for the preparation of the field report. The semester V honors students participates in the tour. Students finally submit a report on their field survey which consists map of the study area, social and economic conditions and problems faced by the local population. The field report is a proof of socioeconomic condition of the local population. It helps the students to acquire knowledge about field survey and data collection.

National Webinar on "Climate Change in India: Mitigation and Adaptation", organized by Department of Geography in association with Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Bidhan Chandra College, Rishra, University of Calcutta, on 20th April 2022 via Google Meet & YouTube Platform.

• The department conduct industrial visit in the nearby industrial plants. In 2023 such a visit was conducted with the students of semester V on 14.09.2023 at the JAYASHRI TEXTILE MILLS, Rishra.
